Opening 6-8pm on Thurs 17 May 2012

From Pallas Projects website:

Conversations in: is an ongoing project that considers the relationship between image & object within the dilemma of a contemporary art practice. Conversations in: (Dublin) is the third chapter in the series following on from Conversations in: (Sydney) 2011 & Conversations in: (Melbourne) 2010. Wynnychuk’s practice is based on the recuperation and transformation of found, familiar and banal objects. The intent is to convert, translate and reassemble the material so that it is imbued with a precarious new energy. The conceptual framework continues a sustained investigation into the theorist Herfried Munkler’s concept of a post-heroic society.

Continuing on from Robert Frank’s video Conversations in Vermont (where Frank invites his children who are literally in the images to discuss the meaning of these now famous photographs), the ambition is to examine and recompose photographic documentation to make new work. Photographs and photograms are included and contextualized within the structure of the total artwork.

The objects that are reconsidered in this variation are woven bamboo walls. Wynnychuk has spent the last ten months in Papua New Guinea working as an independent volunteer in the small rural village of Mewok. On arrival, there was no appropriate accommodation so a traditional bush-material house was built; the bamboo walls in Conversations in: are walls of this house.

Recent solo exhibitions by Wynnychuk have been held at The Australian Experimental Art Foundation, Adelaide; GRANTPIRRIE, Sydney; Conical, Melbourne; Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne; The Narrows, Melbourne; West Space, Melbourne; and High Street Project in Christchurch. Recent group exhibitions include: The Barber Shop, Lisbon: Waikato Museum, Hamilton: The Dowse Museum, Wellington; Margaret Lawrence Gallery, University of Melbourne; and The 4th Amsterdam Biennale.

Melbourne based artist Nicki Wynnychuck is currently a resident artist at Fire Station Artists’ Studios. Since 2008 Fire Station Artists Studios and Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne, have been running an artist exchange programme that sees an Irish artist awarded a studio in Gertrude Contemporary, and on alternate years Fire Station reciprocates for a Gertrude artist with the additional opportunity of an exhibition and curatorial support from Pallas Projects/Studios. Past Fire Station award winners are Jesse Jones (2009) and Rhona Byrne and Mark Garry (2011). This exchange programme will come to an end in 2013 with the last Irish artist traveling to Melbourne.

Listings Information:
Preview: 6 – 8pm Thursday 17th May 2012
Dates: 18th May – 30th June 2012
Venue: The LAB, Foley Street, Dublin 1
Days: Monday – Saturday, 10 – 5pm

An artists’ talk, conducted between Nicki Wynnychuk and curator Gavin Murphy, will take place in The LAB at 1pm on Thursday 24th May. The artist will discuss his residency, his work, and his recent experiences in Papua New Guinea. Booking advised – register

Animals have been used in warfare for centuries for many purposes such as communication, espionage, transport or as explosives, detectors or weapons. Like soldiers some of them were decorated or promoted. The title of the exhibition takes its name from the Natural History Museum in Dublin which is commonly known as “The Dead Zoo”. Dead Zoo aims to display a different type of classification than that of nature. The animals represented are not scientifically classified but militarily. Özlem Günyol and Mustafa Kunt have been collaborating since 2005. Together they investigate the representation of individual and collective belonging, the meaning of language, symbols, and information conveyed by the media. The idea for Dead Zoo originates from their residency in Dublin in 2011, an exchange project between Temple Bar Gallery & Studios and the Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt/M. The participation of the artists was assisted by Jonathan Carroll. Supported by the Friends and Patrons of the Goethe-Institut Irland.

There will be a brief reading, then a chat about the work at 4.30pm on Thursday the 17th.

How the Mighty have fallen is a body of work comprising a video piece and an assemblage of objects.

The sculptures are delicate, temporary, and in some cases barely perceptible constructions. These objects are installed in a manner that relates to the Monster Truck gallery space and its location. This work creates a situation that brings to bear the instability of the concept in relation to another unstable construction – the fleeting and unspeakable individual physical encounter.

This work sits between story-telling and sculpture. It is an attempt to describe something about compulsion and my interaction with material.

Variations of the work has been shown in The Joinery in 2010, and Queen Street Studios, Belfast in 2011. This work continuously changes, and the variation for Monster Truck will shift in emphasis conceptually, architecturally, and aesthetically relative to the previous two versions.

Orchestral Osmosis was a project undertaken as part of the NCAD/UCD Urban Interventions module, in collaboration with DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin City Council Public Art Programme and the Grafton Street Quarter Improvement Project.

The intervention took place on Thursday, 10th May 2012 and involved the streaming and amplifying of music live from the D.I.T.’s Conservatory of Music and Drama on Chatham Row. The sound of musicians’ practice sessions were amplified into Chatham Row and Clarendon Row to create a kind of impromptu, un-choreographed street concert which is invisible to the eye but resonates through the space.

The music was amplified for a period of half and a half and provided an interesting, ephemeral experience for passers-by. The work aimed to push the boundaries between public and private space, allowing the inner workings to become public.

This Friday is the opening of eva International so we will no doubt see the entire Art World of Ireland descending upon Limerick for the occasion. The 2012 edition is entitled After the Future and is curated by Annie Fletcher. The central exhibition was selected from over 2000 proposals from around the world and among the featured artists is current MA ACW student Laura Smith. Go Laura!

Complete list of participating artists is:

Yael Bartana / Zanny Begg & Oliver Ressler / Marcel Broodthaers / Anibal Catalan / Fergus Daly & Katherine Waugh / Kate Davis / Luc Deleu / Priscila Fernandes / Soren Thilo Funder / Aoibheann Greenan / Emma Houlihan / Greg Howie / Sanja Iveković / Sam Keogh / Barbara Knezevic / KwieKulik / Hyewon Kwon / Art Links Limerick (Mary Conroy, Aoife Cox, Joanna Hopkins) / José Carlos Martinat / Gavin Murphy / Ailbhe Ní Bhriain / Doireann Ní Ghrioghair / Adrian O’Connell / Sara O’Gorman / Mark O’Kelly / Niamh O’Malley / Sarah Pierce / Deirdre A Power & Jacki Hehir / Alice Rekab / Laura Smith / Faber Studios (Caelan Bristow, Marie Connole, Aaron Lawless) / Pilvi Takala / Mona Vatamanu & Florin Tudor

Full details can be found on the eva International website but in the meantime here’s the summary ..

This year’s eva International, curated by Annie Fletcher, Curator of Exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, takes the title After the Future to examine how certain artistic practices provide an active invocation of the present and speculate how we arrived here in the first place.

This collaborative and multifaceted project takes as its point of departure the media theorist and activist Franco “Bifo” Berardi’s book After The Future (AK Press, 2011), considering his admonishment of economic futurisms and advocacy for living slowly in the infinite present.

eva International After the Future features a central exhibition curated by Annie Fletcher, selected from over 2000 proposals from 76 countries, and is accompanied by a series of intense collaborations with local, national and international partners.

It opens in the Lighthouse on the 10th of May and runs for a week. Full details as follows:

Art schools by their very nature should be about diversity. Each student has developed a sense of place in the complex arena that is contemporary art. They are at the start of their careers, so an exhibition like this at the Lighthouse offers them a new challenge. We welcome this opportunity, as this will bring new reading to their practices, both broadening and refining their processes. NCAD is happy to support this exhibition in the Lighthouse, and acknowledge the students and the curators in bringing this exhibition to fruition. In particular we would like to thank all involved in the Lighthouse cinema for their support in staging this exhibition.

– OLIVAR WHELAN, LECTURER IN FINE ART, NCAD

You are cordially invited to the Opening Night of the NCAD 3rd Year Painting Exhibition, ADMISSION.

Curated by – Grace Weir and Joe Walker.
Location – Light House Cinema, Smithfield, Dublin 7, Ireland.
Date – 10th May 2012 [running from 10th - 17th May]
Time – 18.00 exhibition opens
